Sandwich House

Sandwich House

Time to review my favorite sandwich shop downtown. I discovered Sandwich House one day when I was wandering around during my lunch break trying to find something to eat. I looked over the menu and saw prosciutto and bresaola and was immediately sold on trying it out. This place is legit. Their sandwiches range in price from $7.75-9.25 but they also run a lunch special where you get half a sandwich, a soup, and a drink for $8.50. They have 4 types of bread: Tuscan white, Tuscan wheat, focaccia, and baguette. Though their Tuscan bread does have some salt in it, unlike real Tuscan bread, it reminded me of the real deal. I always get my sandwiches on it but I did try out one on focaccia just to get an idea of what it’s like.

Pork Loin with Horseradish

I’ll start with the bad. I usually go with one of 2 sandwiches when I go here so for this post I decided I should probably try some other ones to get a bit of variety. I went with the pork loin with horseradish mayo, tomato, and arugula. I was really looking forward to this sandwich but the second I bit into it I realized how dry the pork was. Soooooo dry. And the horseradish mayo did not have nearly enough horseradish. Disappointing. I don’t know if I just got a bad batch of the pork or if this is how it always is but I won’t be getting it again.

Marinate Eggplant on Focaccia

Next I tried the marinated eggplant with goat cheese and red peppers on focaccia. It’s a quality vegetarian sandwich. Filling and flavorful. The eggplant isn’t mushy, in fact its kind of crunchy, which seemed odd. The eggplant is marinated in balsamic vinegar, which is about all you taste and occasionally some goat cheese flavor. The focaccia is light and airy, with the oilyness you expect from it, and not dry at all. Pretty good I’d say.

The first sandwich I ever tried there was the bresaola with Tuscan pecorino. Bresaola is cured beef, unlike prosciutto, which is pork. It’s darker in color, is good and salty, and tastes a bit more gamey than prosciutto. I really like it, it’s a bit different but very accessible. It comes with arugula and olive oil. The arugula is always fresh and gives it a nice kick.

Prosciutto & Fontina

They have several prosciutto sandwiches but my favorite is the #1 with prosciutto, fontina, arugula, tomatoes, and olive oil. It’s just a really well-balanced sandwich. Salty and peppery. The prosciutto is thin and high quality, the arugula and tomatoes are fresh and bright, and the fontina is nice and salty. I’ve also tried the #2 which is the same as #1 except it has mascarpone instead of fontina. It’s a fine sandwich but I prefer the salty fontina to the creamy mascarpone.
